GIST GUARD RE-ARMED!

It's been a long time coming, but the time is here.  The Gist Guard is now armed with (2) full sized 12-pounder Coehorn mortars to be deployed by the Gist Guard at services, ceremonies, and reenactments.  The mortar battery will also serve as a part of the honor guard for the Pvt. John S. Bird - Palmetto Guard Camp #38, Sons of Confederate Veterans, as well as for other camps in the 10th Brigade, SC Division, SCV whenever scheduling allows.
The unit is also considering offering the services of the battery for other events such as weddings, funerals, etc. in exchange for a voluntary donation to the unit.  Would you like a "little" artillery at your next event?  Please contact us today for information.

NOW AVAILABLE!

The unit has procured an original copy of, "The Confederate Defence of Morris Island," written for the Charleston Yearbook of 1884 by former Lieutenant R C Gilchrist of the Gist Guard.  This is a fascinating and very detailed eyewitness account of the siege of Morris Island with emphasis on the assaults on Battery Wagner.  It is believed this copy is one of the few survivors, with very few (if any) accessible to the public.
This manuscript has been transcribed by hand with every effort made to keep it as close to the original as possible.
New copies are now available for purchase.  As far as known, this is the only place you can get it.
GIST GUARD NOW RECRUITING

All good and honorable men are encouraged to join up to serve South Carolina and the Confederacy!  A new heavy artillery company is now organizing in the greater Charleston area for service at home.  Interested parties can sign up on the membership page.

WANTED

Any and all information pertaining to the Gist Guard Artillery unit of South Carolina.  The Gist Guard served at several posts in and around Charleston Harbor as heavy artillery from 1862-1864, and served in the Carolinas Campaign as light artillery in 1865.
The website represents a comprehensive effort to fully document the unit and it's members that served in the War Between the States.  The input and participation of descendants of the Gist Guard artillerymen is also strongly desired.
If you can assist, please email us.
