SERVICE:  Enlisted in Co. A, 1st SC Reserves in July 1864 serving in that unit until October 1864, and was discharged in April 1865 at Greensboro, NC as a member of the Gist Guards.

The Spartanburg Herald ran a special Confederate Veterans' Edition on August 17, 1910.  W M Hembree was listed:

Hembree, W.M. – Born Dec. 4, 1846, Union County.  Enlisted July 1864, Co. A., Ballinger’s Bat., Capt. Daniel Smith.  Transferred to Gist’s Guards.  Farmer.  “I went out with the S.C. Reserves, 1864.  In January 1864, I was transferred to the Gist Guards, Capt. Chichester, Heavy Artillery.”
