"Confederate Defence of Morris Island"
by Robert C Gilchrist, 1884

This manuscript was originally included in the Charleston Yearbook of 1884, and was soon after published separately as a 55 page paperback pamphlet.  It was written by Robert C Gilchrist, senior lieutenant of the Gist Guard Artillery.  The book describes the events and actions on Morris Island from its construction in 1862 to its abandonment in 1863 in great detail.  He lists the officers involved all the way down to company captains, a casualty chart (numbers only, no names) in the back, and lists all the guns that defended Morris Island.  Also included in the original was a fold-out, onion paper blueprint of Battery Wagner.  Apparently, there was also a map of Morris and Folly Islands included, but this is missing from our original copy.  This is an absolutely fabulous resource ... a must for all those who research the action in the Charleston area.
To our knowledge, this book is not available anywhere as a reprint, and hasn't been reprinted since 1884.  The one in our possession appears to be one of a very few survivors, and none that we know of are accessible to the public.
This resource has now been transcribed by hand with every effort taken to stay as true to the original as possible.  Of course there are some differences due to equipment, modern fonts, limited handling to preserve condition, but overall it is a very close copy of the original.  We are now offering new copies for sale.  Proceeds will help fund the activities of the Gist Guard.
